 | Jed1000 (72) 04/18/2007 | I'm with irishgit on this one. She who must be obeyed (aka Mother) never used threats or vague allusions to future punishment to get what she wanted. All she had to do was look down into your eyeballs and you knew that no amount of wheedling or abject apologies was going to save you from your miserable fate. You knew right off that the words, "I'm very disappointed in you" meant you were on the black list for some days to come. I'll give her this, though.. she was always fair. If you got punished you had probably earned it.

Either the version of "wait til we get home" or "wait til your father gets home"
Partly it was because my father's work meant he was often away for weeks at a time.
But mostly because she'd rather deal with it herself.
And finally, because if I misbehaved in public, I was damn sure going to get disciplined and humiliated in public.
