My grandmother was also a great one for this saying.

I ate like a bird, so I'm positive I heard this more than my fair share of times.

My mom never used to make us eat (actually, she encouraged us girls to eat less because she was always afraid of us getting fat). But, when she DID do "starving children in China" stories, she was actually talking about her family in Hong Kong. She told me stories about how eggs were so expensive over there for them that they actually got them as birthday gifts. Never looked at an egg the same way after that, definately made me more appreciative of the life we have here in America.

I think most of us have heard this one. fill in the blank for the country. it did no good. and got to admit I probably have said something similar to this to my own kids once in awhile. and it did not do any good either.

My mother, God rest her, was a ghastly cook. (Anglo-Irish, which should say enough for those with similar backgrounds)

She said this regularly, until one smart-ass day when I said, "Then send my dinner to them."

My father bit his lip and tried to hide the smile, and my mother glared at him and said "The lad's just the same as you, all mouth and no manners."
