I found it better than expected. In addition to alligators, you get to see lots of long legged tropical birds up close. They're loose, not in cages, you can feed them turkey hot dogs. The best part is the crocodile area in the back. At $20, it's a lot cheaper than theme parks. Skip the extra cost train, the park is not big enough to need it. Skip the swamp walk, it's not developed yet. If nothing else, you'll learn alligators don't attack people like you've seen in movies.

From a vacation plan that seems straight from a bad Jeff Foxworthy joke, I went here today after going to the nearby Ripley's Believe it Or Not Odditorium.

Well, they have gators all right. Lots of 'em. And a few birds. And snakes. And a bear.

That's pretty much it. Well, it's not like it was false advertising or anything.

Actually, it was kind of like they had gators, then they collected a whole bunch of exotic pets that were disowned. At least two animals that I had seen (a gator and a duck) had fairly sizable tumors. I was kind of grossed out that the feed dispensers also dispensed little beetles crawling around.

The most interesting critter there was a bird named Costello, who decided to charm us by saying things like "Hello", "Hola", "Polly Want A Cracker" . . . and, to our amazement, perfectly imitated a child's tantrum (which was only topped by him calling out to my husband when he was walking away: "You little a--hole!" I was in stitches).

Overall, it wasn't awful, but if you want to see animals you'd probably get more for your money elsewhere ($19.95 for adults, there's also a $2.50 coupon on their website at www.gatorland.com).

Gatorland is a classic park. It may not have the rides like other parks in central Florida, but it is one of a kind. It can keep children and adluts intrested. You even have the chance to try some gator for lunch.
