I hated summer camp as a kid, but enjoyed this series nonetheless, which was released in 1980. Basically, it dealt with the trials and travails of 8 kids attending summer camp in upstate NY. There was the fat kid, the street-wise kid, the pretty girl, the not-so-pretty girl, the upper-class kid, the snotty kid, the nerdy kid, etc. etc. Predictably, each half-hour episode imparted a significant message about life, relationships, nutrition, ethnic and racial diversity, and how the fat kid could lose enough weight before the mandatory swimming test so he wouldn't embarrass himself. It was directed by Alan Seeger (any relation to Peter Seeger?) and was filmed at actual summer camps in upstate NY. I haven't seen it in many years, and am still not sure why I found it so intriguing, as I was a little too old for it and found its "lessons" a bit obvious and simplistic, but the show did exert a certain charm, and I still have hopes that they'll release it on DVD someday. Maybe it's because of the beautiful scenery of upstate NY?
