Niger is a victim of the silly political correctness now ascendant in the USA. Few of the talking heads on the media are willing to say the word, "Niger." They go through all kids of machinations and affectations to avoid the word. I first noticed this in the yellow, uranium, cake from Niger story in the runup to the Iraq war.
What is really hilarious, is that I buy a lot of Niger Thistle which is a birdseed to feed the little gold finches. Now it is advertised as "nyger" thistle. This is really a hoot!
