Though Ridley Scott has had a few missteps, both "Alien" (1979) and "Bladerunner" (1982) were landmark films and utilized striking imagery. Not a great film by any means, but I also liked the fantasy "Legend" (1985), "Thelma & Louise" (1991) set a standard for modern feminist films, and "Gladiator" (2000) evidences Scott's ability to direct a great action movie. (Scott also directed the television commercial that many rank at #1, namely the 1984 Apple Computer spot.) The bottom line is that Scott has the capacity for greatness on occasion. Ridley Scott was born November 30, 1937 in South Shields, England.

I'd give him one star but Gladiator was okay. Kingdom of Heaven sucked.

Alien was probably the most horrific Sci Fi film ever done- a stunning work- that still scares me. And Gladiator revived the historical epic in a fine manner. A decent director.

Gladiator was brilliantly directed, and Alien was the most original and well done sci-fi flick in ages.

Alien is a terrible sci-fi film when compared to the immortal legacy of Star Trek. Blade Runner is yet another bleak look at the future that is simply aeful. Gladiator is yet another nihilistic historical film that many tout as an epic Epically boring, maybe.

The vision of this man is nothing more than genius. He is a man of perfection, ambience and detail. You can watch his films time and time again and see or hear something different. Blade Runner being the best with Alien coming a close second, then Gladiator - one hell of a masterpiece and the all time chick flick Thelma and Louise.

He gets three stars just for directing Blade Runner, one of the most important and underrated films of the last thirty years, but I could take or leave pretty much everything else he's ever done. I mean, Alien was fun and its influence can not be overstated, but the movie itself was no masterpiece. At least he's diverse (sci-fi, horror, action, historical action, female-oriented drama, etc...). I don't outright hate his movies, which is a pretty good endorsement for a Hollywood director coming from me.

I think Ridley Scott is a wonderful director who has directed a string of great films including "Alien", "Blade Runner", "Black Rain", "Thelma and Louise", "Black Hawk Down" and "Gladiator". Scott is not top notch, but he's talented in his own right.

Great work with Alien and Blade Runner, and very good work with Thelma and Louise, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down, everything else is mediocre

Like most directors, Ridley Scott has some embarrassments on his record (think "GI Jane"), but unlike most directors, he's also put together a long string of great films: "Alien," the under-rated "Blade Runner," and "Gladiator," just to name a few. Those three movies alone should be enough to earn him four stars, if not five.
