 | Spike65 (13) 05/22/2008 | A funny and sometimes intense movie about a troup of hammy stage actors in Warsaw, Poland just before and during the invasion by the Germans at the start of WWII. Many of the actors are Jewish and have a lot to fear from the Nazis taking over their country. Jack Benny plays the lead in this film which is probably his best performance. Enough humor to offset the serious subject of the movie. The Mel Brooks remake is equally enjoyable.

The characters are funny, too - the famous actor, who, when in disguise, asks everyone what they think about "the great actor"; he is also the cheated husband -the German officer who makes jokes about Hitler, blames everything on his adjutant, "Schultz", even when it was his idea (and it usually was) that failed
