Notwithstanding his strong career as a child actor, I consider Ron Howard another hit or miss director. "Night Shift" (1982) was a bit sophomoric, but I'm willing to cut him some slack on a first effort. "Splash" (1984), "Cocoon" (1985), "Willow" (1988), and "Parenthood" (1989) were all safe but still entertaining films, but none were groundbreaking. "Far And Away" (1992) was epic emptiness and "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000) was utter crap, but "Apollo 13" (1995) was an excellent film. Even "The Da Vinci Code" (2006) was safe in that it was certain to be a commercial success. I just don't see much risk taking or long-term influence on his peers to rate any higher than three stars at this point. Ronald William Howard was born March 1, 1954 in Duncan, Oklahoma.

He must make money, but he is nothing special. He is personally likeable and that helps.

A director whose work varies greatly from film to film. Occasionally he'll produce a dramatic movie that is gripping and terrific like Apollo 13 or A Beautiful Mind but then other times, there's a lack of excitement and taste. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, for instance? Need I say more? While I like him immensly as a person, as a director, he's average.

In my opinion Backdraft and Apollo 13 proved that he has the potential to be a better than average director. If he would hone his skill at choosing scripts as he has done as a director he could become one of the better directors of our time.

A technically proficient director with about the same narrative skill as a grade 9 english honours student. His movies are about as gripping as Pennzoil.

He is not the greatest, or even the worst. I would say he is in the middle....and I do think he is a much better actor...

Ron Howard is a pretty good director in my humble opinion. "Apollo 13", "Splash", "Ransom", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "A Beautiful Mind" and "Night Shift" were all great films. Most of his movies are light-hearted romances or comedies ("Splash"), but he has also proven that he has a nac for action ("Ransom") and drama ("Apollo 13", "A Beautiful Mind"). A good director.

I Love Ron Howard. He is great.

I don't know much about directing, but I like Ron Howard very much as an person. Even though he's known success ever since he was a child, (an unsually good child actor, by the way) he is quite modest, and quick to give credit to others around him. He maintains a genuine affection for Andy Griffith, his TV father. And he doesn't have to go around wearing a pretentious toupee. He seems to be one of the most geuinely nice guys in Hollywood.

He has directed some forgettable movies but has also done enough good ones to make up for it. "Apollo 13" is my favorite. However, for me Ron Howard's greatest contribution to the entertainment world was playing Opie. I know that's probably not what he'd like to hear but I can't help it.

I'm not sure how to rate a movie director who, despite a string of very good movies, releases a film so spectacularly awful that you're forced to question his judgment. Howard cranked out harmless, feel-good movies like "Night Shift," "Splash," "Cocoon," and "Parenthood," only to hit us with "Far and Away," one of the most laughable big-budget movies I've ever seen. I guess everyone makes mistakes, huh? My favorite Howard movie may be "Parenthood," which was quirky, amusing, and less formulaic than most of his other movies. Plus it must take an extremely talented director to coax a decent acting performance out of Keanu Reeves.

His movies are all right, but I have trouble seeing him as more than Happy Days' Richie Cunningham. Some of his films are good, though. I know this isn't very helpful, but, hey, folks, it's three thirty in the morning here and I'm tired. Sorry.

Now, here's a case where Hollywood really appeared to throw a curve. No disrespect to his early acting years intended but, cute little Opie Taylor + dorky, good natured teenager Ritchie Cunningham does not seem to add up to gifted director Ron Howard. Yet, there you have it. I have enjoyed not all, but very much of his work over the years - "Parenthood" and "Cocoon" being among my favorites. Even the stuff I didn't personally care for - "Splash" and "Night Shift" to name two - are better than much of the tripe we see as an alternative choice. I would definitely put him in the class of the most superior and decent Tinsel Town has to offer - and that goes for his ability to direct as well as his aptitude for remaining an unspoiled and very respectable human being.
