Priority number one is ending the war in Iraq. It was a mistake from the beginning and Obama never voted to fund this travesty. Let get out of Iraq in 2009 with Barack Obama at the helm.

I think for America to effectively address the terms of victory on EO's worthy list, there would have to be acceptance at home of America's role and responsibility as a conquering nation in the same way it did with Occupied Japan. I highly doubt there is much of a stomach for that domestically in the US.

I notice that nobody objects to the caption title, "plan to end the Iraq war" so I guess I must. It's not about "ending" it . . . it's about winning it. Any strategy which does not include a definition of success is little more than liberal claptrap or uninformed blather resulting from an intellectually lazy analysis (more like a shallow review) of the current situation. It is indicative of the current Congress' approval ratings which make George W. Bush look like Ronald Reagan by comparison.

Most people cannot identify what would constitute a victory, let alone articulate a plan for such. To me, a victory would have to include the apparent defeat of the insurgency/terrorist forces who randomly kill innocent people daily, the emergence of an Iraqi-born leader and an obvious acceptance or acknowledgement of his singular leadership by some objective referendum and some empirical evidence regarding the quality of life of the average Iraqi, such as GDP comparisons, unemployment rates, percentages of people achieving education credentials like high school diplomas, college degrees and certifications associated with various trades (nursing, doctors, tradesmen, military, etc. ) If this is the first time you've thought about any or all of those indications, you have no idea what our men and women in uniform are doing in Iraq today. You're only empirical knowledge of Iraq has to do with the number of American service personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that the American press can distort the truth about the reason for their sacrifice. Sad.

Oscar has a point here. I don't know if such a plan does exist to safely exit Iraq, or if it can be done at all (we dug a pretty deep hole this time). Best wishes to the troops in any case for their safe return home to family and friends.

Maybe it's written down on a golden ticket hidden somewhere inside the wrapper of a Wonka bar, otherwise I don't think they have one.

You have all left such thoughtful comments on this topic, and I can't add much, other than to say that the reason we don't seem to have a plan to get ourselves out is that we're reached a point (probably intended by the neoconservatives all along) where we have become colonists, rather than just fellow fighters. That is to say, the interests that some American corporations have in Iraq now are so entrenched that it would be very difficult to get ourselves out, and the Iraqis meanwhile haven't gotten to the point where they can secure even a single city block on their own. But what do you expect from a people we've treated no better than as colonial subjects?

Based on a lie. . .first validated and extended by critique of questioners as unpatriotic. . .then used as an election tatic. . .then troop deployments were extended. . .we continue to denigrate the opinion of America worldwide while creating the perfect fertile ground for more terrorists. . .all I can do is laugh at those who still insist on inhabiting the shrinking island of believers. . .get the troops home and leave our little puppet-government (oh, love those 'elections') to itself because we cannot be the Mid-East police without serious consequences. . .this has been, and will continue to be, about money. . .

I need to ask people what has been resolved by those soldiers fighting in Iraq? If anyone can give me a well documented answer to my question I'll shut up. Until then No.

( . . . I think my head just might explode tonight).

Everyone wants the war to end. People just have a different idea of how to get there.

I spoke early and often on this brainless project of the USA. I am heartsick at the loss of life and treasure. Result? Another failed state and the biggest strategic blunder made by the United States in the last 100 years!
