You and I produce, per capita, 7.5 tons of carbon dioxide a year. Having seen "An Inconvenient Truth," which made a believer out of me regarding global warming, one of my priorities is to help spread the word about what we can do about it. Here are a few simple things we all can do to reduce CO2 emissions:
* Replace incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescent ones. Replacing one lightbulb saves 150 lbs. of CO2 yearly. If every U.S. household replaced five, it would be the equivalent of taking a million cars off the road for a year.
* Check your tire pressure more frequently.
* Turn off electronic devices when you're not using them--your TV, stereo, computer.
* Recycle more.
* Insulate your water heater.
* Get a programmable thermostat, and program it in winter for two degrees lower than you have been doing; program it for two degrees higher in summer.
* When buying a new appliance, make sure it has an Energy Star label.
To see how many pounds of CO2 your household can save each year by doing any of these things, check the Inconvenient Truth website
