 | SilverFox (26) 08/29/2007 | UPDATE: Please don't mistake my comments. This is something that absolutely must be done, and is top priority--we don't really have a choice. But we need to ask the questions below. And why the hell can't we, for once during this administration, do something competently? What a relief that would be, for a change. When the team keeps losing, what does the owner of the team do? Answer: Fire the coach, and get another one in there who can get the job done right.
ORIGINAL COMMENT: Who wouldn't be for protecting our homeland? The real questions are: (1) can it be done competently and efficiently? (so far the answer appears to be no); (2) can it be done without squandering tons of our tax money? (ditto); (3) (related to (1) and (2)), can they cover everything that needs to be covered, e.g., the ports? (again, the answer appears to be no); and (4) can it be done without sacrificing important everyday rights, even though most of us are willing to sacrifice to some degree and suffer some inconvenience, if it pays off? (I'm staying out of that one; it's not my phone calls they're monitoring (but how can I be sure?), nor have I yet been barred from getting on a plane because my name is on some totally f**ked up list). As the saying goes, the devil is in the details.

 | FranksWildYears (48) 08/17/2007 | The leadership in Washington seems to be prepared to do everything possible to make security of the homeland the top issue of the day. They will seal the borders up tighter than a drum of toxic waste. They will violate the privacy and freedom of the average citizen. They will alienate the nation from the world community. And they will invade foriegn countries on false pretenses. The only thing they seem unprepared to do is consider any of the reasons that people are so interested in causing them harm in the first place.

 | MariusQelDroma (36) 08/13/2007 | One thing to remember about this whole "protecting the homeland" thing. One of the Framers summed it up best when he said "when people sacrifice liberty for security, they deserve neither liberty nor security." Finding a healthy balance between making things safer and preserving our rights under the Constitution is the tightrope we're walking with this issue.

 | Loerke (46) 08/12/2007 | I'm glad to see many of the reviewers shun talking about homeland security as some kind of absolute value that we needn't dare question. It seems that you just have to drop the phrase nowadays, and everything else goes out the window. As SilverFox said, we have to be willing to do a real cost-benefit analysis of what terrorism can cost us, as opposed to what the buildup of a massive defense industry, the loss of our civil rights, and brutal foreign wars will cost us. But it's such a sacred cow (pardon the cliche) that no politician is even daring to suggest that it's not an absolute. We need to change that state of affairs.

 | YaVon (6) 07/03/2007 | I love feeling safe in America, but do I have to give up more or my freedoms to have that warm cozy feeling? It is just a feeling, if they wanted us we are certainly vulnerable. Really, do you feel protected?

 | GenghisTheHun (168) 06/20/2007 | This is important but maybe not in the way you think. We need to shrink, drastically, the size of our "defense" establishment. It is an imperial force not a defense force. Let's worry about the homeland first. Maybe we could try to get control of the borders, for instance!

 | CanadaSucks (45) 06/20/2007 | Empty flag-waving rhetoric. . .'Protect the Homeland'? This has, of course, been a priority since the surrender of the British. . .this is like telling me that breathing oxygen is very important to all of us. . .

 | kamylienne (77) 06/20/2007 | . . . everyone is for "homeland security". It's just a matter of opinion of how to balance security and giving up certain rights and freedoms.
