Immigration of the legal way is good and healthy, since that is what built this nation. This ignoring and circumventing of the rules the past few decades has turned into a massive issue on a wide front, not just in people who don't pay taxes, but people who leach the system, people who traffic both in other people and in drugs, and other criminals hiding out up here to avoid prosecution back home and commit even more crime. Not to mention the drain on our health and education systems. What makes it worse is that our own government has turned a blind eye to this issue by failing to enforce the existing laws on the books. Now this problem is so big that fixing it simple and easy is no longer viable. Now it gets messy to make any impact on it.

The problem is "Immigration" and not necessarily "the Border." The two are often illegitimately linked. Over half of illegal immigrants in the U.S. today are people who have come into the country legally and have simply overstayed their visa (three of the 9/11 terrorists were actually in this category). We don't have a feasible way of stopping people from coming into this country, and anyone who thinks that somehow building a fence will take care of the problem is delusional. Those fence-builders would simply waste billions on building walls through which legal immigrants would pass, only to become illegals eventually. The real question to ask is how we can get more people on the track to citizenship. If we continue to have a lot of fugitives running around the country, we will continue to have a labor market in which wages are depressed by the presence of illegals. People with visas just need to be Americanized more rapidly, so that instead of destroying actual citizens' wages, taking their health benefits, and so forth, they are adhering to the same work laws (with the same protections) and paying the same taxes as Americans.

Bottom line here...

Amnesty is not the answer!!!

Enforce our laws that are already in place!!!

Very important especially with regard to employment and education. We will have to provide both.

I want a big f#cking wall and serious, not phantom, enforcement concerning illegal immigration. . .but money talks and helping out the middle class certainly walks. . .

The only reason we've done nothing about it is that EVERYBODY realizes this is the labor force that will do what "no one else will do" (which is sociopathic plutocracy/Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao code for $.00000000000025 per hour).

There is no more important issuse facing our nation. Bush drones about the war on terror (Iraq), costing lives and draining our resources while leaving our own back door wide open- all for greed.

In late 2003 the Bush administration openly criticized Syria for failure to secure its border with Iraq. The Syrians laughed, basically responding, "Who are you guys to preach to anyone about border security?" For once the Syrians were right.
