 | EschewObfuscation (61) 08/16/2007 | My son's best friend spent most of 2005 manning a .50 caliber gun mounted on a humvee running convoys in and out of Abu Graib prison. A month before he returned to the US, one of the humvees in his convoy hit an IED and was overturned, landing on its roof. Several GI's were killed in the incident. Brandon could see a buddy of his still alive in the humvee and ran to save him despite the small arms fire they were encountering, saving the guy's life. He won the Bronze Star for his brave action.
As he related the story to me, I had tears in my eyes, unable to speak. I just hugged him and thanked him. He looked at me with the most deadpan expression, and said, "I could never leave him out there. "
There was never the least recognition in our local media, here in the Peoples' Republik of New York, nor did he expect any. He was almost embarrassed telling me the story. "Honoring Our veterans, " indeed. Brandon is training in Vermont for his scheduled deployment to Afghanistan in December, 2007.
