05/10/2008 | shocking scene one would not expect to happen to the star of the movie midway through. bet it scared some people from taking a shower for awhile. really upsetting even now. maybe because being naked in a shower is so vulnerable. even Janet Leigh herself said she went years before she would take a shower. who could blame her?

05/08/2008 | Even people who have not watched the film know this scene. Interesting psychological endeavor, too (the scene never shows the lady actually getting stabbed, but there's enough going on that you will probably think that you did see it), strong musical effects to heighten the tension, rapid camera angle changes, it's probably something that every film student has to study.
And you know what they used for "blood"? Chocolate syrup.

05/08/2008 | You can't overestimate the impact of this scene or this film. It's been said already- use of camera, clever editing, sexualized portrayals, flawless sound and lighting. . .It's Hitch at the height of his powers. It must have shocked the hell out of Ozzie and Harriet in 1960.

05/08/2008 | Famous scene and properly so. One of the great surprise sequences in movie-making, killing off the star mid-picture.
This is such a fine film it would be easy to pick several moments, the killing of the detective, the discovery of mother, the disposal of the car, the symbology of the color of underwear, and the psychologists dialogue.
My feeling is that this is Hitchcock's second best film, with only the near flawless "Vertigo" in front of it.

05/08/2008 | Hitchcock at his best. He combined four elements: The "eee-eee-eee-eee" sound, the knife going up, blood running into the drain and our imaginations. This struck at the fear and paranoia in millions of viewers. He once said something like. "When a person is on a rollercoaster, they can't figure out why in the world they're doing this. But, if they didn't feel like that during the ride, they would be disappointed when the ride was over." Until I saw it the second time, I didn't realize that he never actually showed the knife going in. Got me!
