Bender and Plank are among the true greats of the game, Waddell was crazier than six waltzing mice but could throw a lamb-chop past a wolf, and a host of others made major contributions.

 | oscargamblesfro (76) 06/29/2007 | Rube Waddell was either nuts or what we'd call mentally retarded, but kinda like Koufax- very domineering over about a 5 year stretch, Albert " Chief" Bender was another HOF'er, a Chippewa who is probably the most famous Native American player ever. Eddie Plank was up there in the roll of all time great lefties, just kept winning and winning for a long time-327, I think, total wins. A guy named Jack Coombs won as many as 31 games, but was really only a big star for a while. Some of the big pitchers of the Red Sox and Yankee dynasties got their start here, like Joe Bush, Herb Pennock, and Bob Shawkey. A tremendous staff, a key component of the marvelous 1911-14 team, one of the truly great teams of the early part of the last century...
