Under-rated then and now, and seemingly largely forgotten, they had several standouts in Saberhagen, Leonard, Black and Jackson, all of whom put some good years together. Were a big part of the reason the Royals were always in the hunt during this era, and have seldom been since.

Larry Gura was deadwood before he came here, but turned into a crafty, junkballing lefty and had some good years. Paul Splittorff won 20 games in '73, 19 in '77, and was a noted Yankee killer, for which he should be endowed with a lifetime pension... Steve Busby had some fine years, threw hard, and also threw a pair of no hitters before he got hurt. Marty Pattin was a dependable veteran. Saberhagen had some great years, and they also produced guys like Danny Jackson, Bud Black, and Mark Gubicza in these years. About 3.5
