The romanticism of her history (both real and fictional) has led many to overlook the fact that Mary was quite ineffectual, and largely a captive of her self-interested advisors

Irishgit is right. Her life story makes for effective drama but the woman herself was a terrible politician and statesman who never actually "ruled" anything. Easily manipulated, she was at the mercy of varying people and interest groups her entire life. She's most often rightly portrayed as a tragic figure at the mercy of her own foolishness and ineptitude.
