Approximately half of the 6000 tribal members of this Pueblo Indian tribe live on their defensively placed mesa-top village in New Mexico, known as "Sky City", which not only extremely harsh, but is one of the oldest, continually inhabited places in North America. There is some dispute as to the meaning of their name, it being either "People of the White Rock", or "to prepare". Tha Acoma share a common language, Keresan, with the Cochiti, Laguna, San Felipe, Santa Ana, Santo Domingo, and Zia Pueblos and it is activity taught today. This amazing tribe took the full brunt and brutality of the Spandiards in the 17th Century and were one of the most involved forces during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Inspite of 100's of years of attmepting to wipe-out their heritage, the Acoma still practice their traditional religions. (Add picture)
