Today, this Southern Californian tribe is called Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, named by missionaries due to their original location at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Their language, Uto-Aztecan, was last spoken in the 1960's, but tapes made in 1933 have been found and several are attempting to re-learn their native language. In 1997, bulldozing for the construction of 149 homes at a village site in the Newport Back Bay uncovered more than 600 human remains that dated back some 9,500 years. There are approximately 1600 Acjachemen in Orange County.
