This is a group of eleven tribes that exist today under the name of Pit River Indians. They reside in Northern California under Mount Shasta and their name means "Flowing River/River People". They lived by hunting and gathering and in small groups with no centralized political authority.
The Achumawi did not have formalized religious practices (ceremonies, rituals or priests), but possessed elaborate stories of creation and natural events. The last known census placed their population at around 3000, combined.
