Members of the Wabanaki Confederacy (Abenaki, Maliseets, the Passamaquoddys, and the Mi'kmaqs), who fled the devastating diseases of the Europeans, the Penobscot faction of approximately 3000, now reside primarily in Maine. The Wabanaki Confederacy were mortal enemies of the Iroquois. Their name, Abenaki means "People of the Dawn"; or "Easterners".
