The Akainawa are one of four tribes that comprise the Blackfoot Nation. They were a powerful buffalo-hunting society of the northern plains and around 14000 (with 8000 still speaking the language) still reside in southern Alberta and northern Montana. These People welcomed the arrival of the Europeans with their horses, but it didn't take long before smallpox, the anihilation of the buffalo and suppression reduced these great People to government rations. In spite of this, the language and culture is strong today. One of the four groups of Blackfoot was improperly named "Blackfeet" by the French; something the Blackfoot resent to this day.
