This group, currently sharing a reservation in Montana with their allies, the Assiniboine, once made the mistake of chosing the powerful Blackfoot as their enemies. This, along with a smallpox epidemic, nearly wiped these Plains People out, but they avoided deportation to Oklahoma and opted to stay in present-day Oklahoma where there is still conflict between the Ahahnelin and government-sponsored goldmining on tribal lands, allowable by a treaty signed at gunpoint in the 1800's. They are among the Gros Ventre-speaking tribes that were left behind when their ancestors, the Arapaho, migrated to the North.
