While baseball umpires have distinct personalities, because there's no way for them
not to make a lot of decisions in a game, I never really notice NBA refs until they blow a call, and even then I don't see an error as a reflection of a particular personality. Until now, that is. With the Donahy scandal, I'll be watching more closely. Looking through the names, Dan Crawford is the only one who stands out to me now. I thought he had a good rapport with the players. And, interestingly, having googled him, I came across
a gambling site that actually tracks (!) the average number of fouls called by particular refs. Interestingly, Crawford seems to call fouls at one of the lowest rates of all officials. That's all the better for the flow of a basketball game.
