The Alsea Indian Language, spoken by the Athabascan Yaquina, Yakwina, Yakona and Alseya tribes of the Oregon coast has not been spoken since the mid 20th century. Very little is known of these People. Their population in the mid 19th century was very low, with some groups numbering under 100. With dispersal and assimilation into Confederated Tribes of Siletz, which is a federally recognized group of 27 tribal bands that once inhabited the northern California, coastal Oregon and southwest Washingron area. Although the Alsea and their language are considered extinct, the Confederacy is a sovereign government, which maintains schools, the Siletz Community Health Clinic, the Chinook Winds Casino and Convention Center, as well as the Chinook Winds Golf Resort and the monthly Siletz News.
