06/05/2008 | The old binary voting system (helpful/unhelpful) had a logic and simplicity to it that the current one lacks.
That said, I believe Magellan simply got fed up with people endlessly b****ing and moaning about 'unfair' unhelpful votes: hence the new system.

06/05/2008 |  4TH UPDATE: I for one am getting really tired of trolls using the FUNNY button to express disagreement with a review, instead of for its proper purpose. It has gotten to the point where I hesitate to use the FUNNY button anymore for fear the reviewer will think it's just one more troll disagreeing instead of me trying to tell the reviewer I think his/her review is funny.
I understand the rationale behind elimination of the old UNHELPFUL button and the goal of using buttons only to give positive feedback and encouragement. The thought was that if someone disagreed with a review, they could leave a comment. But for whatever reason–not wanting to be identified, not wanting to take the time, whatever–it isn't working, and most trolls aren't leaving comments. Human nature being what it is, it's apparent to me that some people desperately want to indicate disagreement, and will find a way to do so, unfortunately including misuse of RIA buttons. So let's face the reality–RIA is never going to eliminate the misuse of buttons until it adds a button to express disagreement.
I renew, with added emphasis, my feeling that we ought to add a DISAGREE button. If we can't have a fourth button for technical reasons, only three, then let's substitute a DISAGREE button for the FUNNY button. Can we get a bandwagon started here? Let's hear your thoughts.

"funny as in 'ha ha' funny?"

04/08/2008 | What I'd find great use for is a "Is that all you got?" button - for the reviews that say things like " 'Nuff said" or "So Sweet" or "Best Ever", or "Eddie Van Halen Rocks!!!!!!!".

I don't quite agree or don't agree at all, but you have a tendency to rate the same stuff or we happen to get along well, so I will give it an agree.
I agree with 57% of this, but I actually have a real life headache and it's easier to just click agree.
I don't agree and because of my fantastic memory you gave Britney Spears and Church's Chicken a 1 back in August of '06, I will never agree with you again.
I don't agree because it is too hard to deal with the thought right now, or it isn't funny and I don't understand it, so therefore it's a disagree.

In my opinion you should have to earn the right to mark things as not helpful. Maybe getting helpful votes earns you points, and you can spend the points trashing the reputations of your nemesis.

03/15/2008 | I would like to see the disagree button. There are times when people say something funny and I automatically click on funny. It doesn't mean I disagree with them ~ just that they crack me up (in a good way). If I don't agree with someone, I don't rate their answer because I am unsure of what to click on.

I don't mind getting 'funny' votes from those who disagree with my serious opinions, 'cause voters who use 'funny' as a weapon only reveal the weakness of their own arguments.

Yes or No, or Agree/disagree just sound better to me. The helpful
is ok, but something about unhelpful or funny, when used the wrong way, sounds sarcastic. I think it may eliminate some of the troll population.

I do think the addition of a "disagree" option to the current choices would be good, but I also agree that no matter what the options are they will be misused. There will always be beggers for more helpfuls, trolls choosing disagree without even reading the review, and the ever present buddy system. No matter the system, ratings should be taken with a grain of salt.

10/08/2007 |  Having been a proponent of introducing the 'agree' feature, will remind the RIA community that, to a certain extent, the 'helpfuls' - and most especially the 'unhelpfuls' - were misused and abused to vent personal rivalries. Previously, while numerous comments would introduce fresh insight on diverse topics, from sports to history and science, the deceitful few, to get back at the political or religious adversary who made the comment, would file 'unhelpful' against it - often enough anonymously. A posting that would earn ten favorable comments averaging, say, 3.5 stars would yet rate 2.0 stars cumulatively from all twenty users. Not kosher (almost said "UnAmerican"?). The English Language is not all that complicated: where a comment or a point of view on RIA about a particular subject is fresh and revealing, even if not shared entirely, there should be no problem in acknowledging its helpfulness should personal reflection come into play. Where the comment is not new or original but shared, perhaps an 'agree' is more fitting than a 'helpful.' I submitted that the 'disagree' button and/or rating fewer than three stars would demand fairness in that the user should provide his or her reasoning. Better perhaps to leave out the 'disagrees' altogether (for which reason a 5-star rating is not posted here).

First, and foremost, there's no way to make a perfect way to rate stuff like this. "Helpful" and "Not Helpful" can be subjective. "Agree" and "Disagree" does not comment on the quality of the review so much as its popularity. "Funny" and "Not Funny" has more of a place on entertainment-oriented weblists than it does on real rating lists. So, what's the solution? Scrap everything and make it so that you have to comment it in order to express your thoughts? This won't sit well for those who want to just do a quick "in-and-out" supportive click, and it won't work well for those who want to express dissent because few people are willing to possibly start a flame war. How about doing a rating scale, just like we rate everything else? Sounds fair, but then you'll have to uproot the already-existing framework of the current system, which will just end up being a huge mess.
No matter what system is used, there's always going to be those who use it inappropriately to pump up their friends or themselves. The only reasonable thing left to do is to recognize that it's a flawed system and let the judge of quality work be your own judgement rather than a bunch of stats.
