Definitely not a way to meet new people who are non-smokers. However, being able to say "Let's go for a smoke" somehow makes me feel connected to another smoker. We share an addiction and a vice, and at work it gives me a chance to go socialize with my friends.

I have a friend and she is the most awkward person you will ever meet. Even when I smoke I can't think of what to say when she says "Come on, lets make conversation", she however can think of anything to say. It makes me feel anti-social. She even pointed that out, which pissed me off because I couldn't tell if she was joking or just doesn't think before she speaks.

Crap. Money, power, physical attractiveness, booze, charm, humor. Those are social lubricants. Smoking is rapidly becoming the mark of the social pariah.

It may well be a social lubricant among smokers, but among the general population it is way down the list after intellegent conversation, wit, good manners and an unusual dancing style. Personally I haven't met anyone who is inordinantly aroused by that loud rattly coughing sound or the smell of stale smoke on clothing.

What the fuck is a social lubricant, anyways? Smoking helps not an iota in social situations, you either smoke or you don't.

Smokers do seem to have some sort of weird instant bond, but I don't think that's really worth it.

Smoking is really only a good way to break the ice with other smokers in a bar type setting where alcohol (the tried and true lube) is being served up.

It is a turn-off for most non-smokers, and as a smoker one is ostracized. But it is precisely this sense of otherness that thrusts people together, standing the regulation 20 feet from the door in the driving sleet: the guy from the mailroom gets to know the VP of Tax - they have a common vice which binds them..

Sorry, most people can't stand the smoke smell, much less the secondhand wreathing your empty noggin. Besides, KY works better. :)
