My dad once bought me a "nitelite" from his buddy (when I was a kid). The said "nitelite" was a light that, when turned on, had the words "BAR OPEN" on them.

I use to hate neon signs growing up. There was something depressing about them to me. They kind of blinked out a sad lonliness - the visual representation of sad people with screwed up lives. But then, maybe I just watched too much old 50's film noir on late night TV. Dunno. As time passed, as with many things that aren't appreciated in the time they're most prolific, neon did seem to gain some respect - not so coincidently, as the old stuff disappeared. I eventually saw through the bleakness to a kind of retro/artsy campiness and came to appreciate the classic side of neon. Still, anything can be over done or not done well enough. I think it has its place on the American landscape...it just needs to be done with taste and a sense of style.

Neon signs have their place. For example, a bar just wouldn't look right without a few neon beer signs in the windows.
