 | abichara (63) 04/11/2008 | This Senate seat will most likely go from Republican to Democratic control come November. The state in recent years has been trending Democratic; in 2006, Senator George Allen lost his seat to a Democrat whom had never run for office before. John Warner, the state's last remaining Republican Senator is retiring, thus leaving this seat open. Popular former Governor Mark Warner (D) will likely take win the seat with minimal opposition. Most big name Republicans have taken a pass on the race, despite the fact that it's an open seat. The political climate is difficult for an aspiring Republican Senator, and it's said that some of Republicans in the congressional delegation are waiting to get a shot at running against Senator Jim Webb, who's seen as much weaker than Mark Warner. The Republicans will nominate controversial former Governor Jim Gilmore. Warner should have no problem beating him back.
