I think a stat like this points out one of the major problems with the nature of sports records. Sure Young's record is incredible and will never be broken but the game is just not the same. Young also pitched way more innings and started more games than anyone. He also lost more games and gave up more hits than anyone. Clearly it was a very different game back then. Far fewer home runs were hit and the game wasn't as physically hard on players. They didn't have to travel coast to coast, play under lights and deal with fans, media and the distractions of the business side of the modern game. And as far as performance enhancing substances goes, the only thing around was probably corn liquor.

I agree with everyone here! What can you say that hasn't already been said about a guy whose very name is the epitomy of pitching excellence? And 511 career victories on the mound? That's crazy! And I don't think anyone will ever reach 400 wins in their career, let alone 500. Cy Young can rest in peace knowing his career win total will never be approached.

Will NEVER be matched or passed again!!

Never say never. . .unless we're talking about 511 wins. . .it won't happen again- the game has changed too much. . .question to the more intelligent baseball fans here- will there ever be another 400 game winner?

400 wins in this era is highly unlikely, 500 is out of the question.

Kinda hard to argue against the guy whose name is on the award given to the best pitcher every year...

This is it. Of all the "big" records, this is the one that will stand forever, or at least until humans evolve to the point where someone can pitch effectively until they're 65 years old. Young pitched in two era's of baseball, an antediluvian one with huge advantages to pitchers, and the dead ball era, which only had big advantages for pitchers. No one has come anywhere close to this total, even those good pitchers who had the same advantages he had. Number 2 on the list is still a hundred wins back.
