In order to beat this one, a pitcher would have to pitch three no-hitters in a row. The mathematical probability of this alone precludes it. The closest anyone has come to matching Vander Meer's record was another Cincinnati Reds pitcher, Ewell Blackwell. On June 18, 1947, Blackwell pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Braves, and in his next start, June 22, against the Brooklyn Dodgers, he took a no-hitter into the ninth inning when it was broken up by Eddie Stanky. Look at it from another perspective: What's the chances of a relief pitcher going 27 consecutive hitless innings?

Aside from Cy Young's ridiculous wins and losses totals, this may be the most unreachable record on here. No hitters are thrown pretty much every year. A major accomplishment, but not particularly rare. Vander Meer is the only pitcher in major league history to have thrown 2 consecutive no-no's. It isn't impossible to imagine some pitcher duplicating the feat. But throwing 3 consecutive and breaking it? Forget about it.
