 | Loerke (46) 01/16/2008 | I used to think that this record could be broken, but an essay by Stephen Jay Gould in his baseball book convinced me that it's a statistical freak that is as hard to break as any in pro sports. Gould concludes that there's virtually no evidence supporting the idea that a hitter can get a hit when he really needs to -- that there is, in effect, no such thing as "clutch" hitting. So the streak is not really a testimonial to DiMaggio's abilities, which didn't even rank among the best of his time; instead, it's just a string of incredible luck that it would be very difficult to repeat. And when I think of the psychological burden involved, including constant media attention and pressure not to bunt, it would seem impossible to replicate -- but I'd love to see a player prove me wrong.

 | OC (0) 12/07/2007 | I guess I'm the only one in here who thinks getting a hit day in day out without fail for a third of a season is a near impossible task. We will probably see a 40 game streak, maybe even 45, but how will a player be able to keep going with the media circus that would surround him as he got closer? Too much pressure. The record will stand.

 | irishgit (137) 10/09/2007 | This is eminently breakable.
Its a matter of a skilled hitter getting and staying lucky, and healthy, for about two months.
Not that that's an insignificant accomplishment, in fact its a remotely unlikely accomplishment, but its well within the realm of possibility.

 | CanadaSucks (45) 09/29/2007 | This one gets overblown by East-coast New-York sportswriters as being 'unbreakable' - it is a great record that will (someday) fall. . .now matching Ted Kennedy's whiskey consumption during a Saturday evening- that's an untouchable record. . .

 | jgls (12) 09/29/2007 | not as untouchable as many of the other records listed here, but i will probably not see it broken in my lifetime. that being said, i didn't think that ty cobb's hit record or lou gehrig's consecutive games played record would ever be broken either.
