Back in the day it was common for starting pitchers to pitch 300+ innings in a season, thus picking up more wins/losses etc. Along with Young's lengthy career, and the fact that pitchers these days rarely pitch more then 7 innings, I assure you this record will NEVER be broken.

Seems to me to be almost as unbreakable as Cy Young's other big record. There was a big fuss made a few seasons ago when a Tigers pitcher lost 20 games, the first time it had happened in a while. A pitcher would need to do that over more than 15 seasons before getting to this number!

Breaking this record requires a special kind of pitcher.

It requires one with a career record of about .500, who stays around forever, and has pretty good stuff.

And guess what? In recent memory someone almost did it. Nolan Ryan managed to cough up 292 losses before he packed it in.
