I'm including Calvados here because its derivation from fruit connects calvados to some liqueurs. It is basically cognac produced from apples, tasting a little like applejack except it's dry and smooth rather than sweet. I've had some horrible apple ciders, but the Calvados I've tried has been uniformly excellent.
