Sure, I agree with this in principle and in practice. But I have a problem rating the item for this specific list, because there's tenuous connection between the welfare state and liberalism. Liberals might believe in a welfare state, but so did Bismarck and then Hitler in Germany ...

UPDATE: On second thought, this IS a major reason I lean left ... If the question is WHY I hold the political positions I do, a commitment to the equalizing of status would be one motivation.

I believe that socialism is not what this country needs.

"Thesis of gargantuan proportions" - this listing has too many things. ("Unfortunate" could mean anything.) Healthcare and Education should be a top priority of any decent civilization- all else can be negotiated in one form or another. But the language of the listing troubles me- it's a broad brush-stroke. . .

I think what makes it bad on legitimate people to get help is all the ones who have taken advantage of the system. I have seen people who truly needed the help and worked hard all of their life, and yet turned away because of the ones who have milked the system.

to a point. i agree that we should help out the less fortunate who have earned some paychecks, and have tried to make a living. sometimes we fall on hard times and i would not want to see someone starve, be homeless, or have no way to get medicine. but TO A POINT I do not think that welfare, food stamps, free medical help should be for a lifetime. would NOT be supportive of mothers{ and fathers} who produce a baby just about every year than show up with their hand out. Job training yes to better themselves. I know this is an expensive world and sometimes you need help would be more supportive of the less fortunate who are trying to work but need some extra help. Life long freeloaders NO!
