The playing field will never be totally level until those with money and power finally decide to share the wealth with those who have not (and the likelihood of that is about zero).

As Loerke pointed out, Harvard opening its doors to a few more minorities isn't going to make that big an impact and the same goes for places of employment. Bigger steps are required if society truly wants to make a difference.

Affirmative action is compensatory, and thus by definition too little and too late. While it has opened some doors, it's facile to believe that it can lead to major progress toward racial equality. We're only a few generations away from the era when minorities could be beaten and jailed for having the nerve to do such things as owning property, so the present (and unacceptable) level of racial inequality will need to be addressed by taking larger steps toward the redistribution of wealth. Half of black households today have a net worth, after debt, of $0 or less, which is the startling legacy of historical injustice. Harvard's opening its doors to a few more minorities isn't going to change much. In short, I don't think the left should attach too much hope to AA.

affirmative action is discriminatory and rewards mediocrity.

I believe that discrimination on the basis of gender, religion, and sexual orientation should be illegal, and vigorously prosecuted by the state. However, Affirmative Action has nothing to with this - Affirmative Action is about compensating for past injustices, and my personal feeling is that by institutionalizing different treatment for different races, that it does more harm than good.
