 | ma duron (62) 10/17/2007 | Why has no one here told me about K.D. Lang's version? Heard it just this Monday during the End-titles to the affective Julie Christie-Gordon Pinsent movie 'Away From Her' (2006). Played it back two times just before returning the DVD to the video store.
"Helpless"
There is a town in north Ontario,
With dream comfort memory to spare,
And in my mind
I still need a place to go,
All my changes were there.
Blue, blue windows behind the stars,
Yellow moon on the rise,
Big birds flying across the sky,
Throwing shadows on our eyes.
Leave us
Helpless, helpless, helpless
Baby can you hear me now?
The chains are locked
and tied across the door,
Baby, sing with me somehow.
Blue, blue windows behind the stars,
Yellow moon on the rise,
Big birds flying across the sky,
Throwing shadows on our eyes.
Leave us
Helpless, helpless, helpless.
Lang is no doubt the interpreter whom Neil Young must have envisioned that many years ago, so much so that in her voice one seems to find that musical intent which Young must have meant to convey in his own classic original.

CSN's debut was a pretty good but flawed debut, but the followup with Young showed a lot of improvement, and this was the best song on an album loaded with classics. One of Young's greatest tracks in his long career.
