11/09/2007 | Most so-called democratic nations are actually republics, countries in
which the population elects representatives. One might call it a
poor man's democracy, but it's infinitely more workable in a society of
any substantial size. Republicanism, considered independently of
any other national philosophies that might modify it, has proven to be
the most popular, most satisfying, and most peaceful political system
the world has known so far.
