 | oscargamblesfro (76) 11/23/2007 | A hard band to assess because they went from a baroque/ pop band ( and were one of the very earliest groups to mix classical music with rock) to a band that did one album that mixed traditional Greek/ Middle Eastern music with rock to a blues/ rock/ bordering on metal act. Put out 5 albums in the late 60's/ early 70's. Hard band to pin down, never had any real, tangible commercial success and their music really was all over the place in terms of quality. Formed by two guys from Tom's River N.J., and three from the famous school Juiliard. One of the Juliard guys did the theme from the X- Files years later, and the other, the late Michael Kamen, a dead ringer for John Belushi or, as the late critic Lillian Roxon said, a Roman emperor, did a ton of film soundtracks and wound up working with big names like Bowie, Clapton, Pink Floyd, Pete Townshend, and Metallica. Similar band to Procol Harum, the Left Banke, or the Beatles on their orchestrated tracks on the early stuff. Later on became more of a kind of an early hard rock act, but with Kamen's more soulful vocals much more akin to, say, Steve Winwood of Traffic than Deep Purple or Sabbath.
