 | oscargamblesfro (76) 11/15/2007 | A provocative and at the time very controversial band featuring Beat Generation figures Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupeferberg, who were somewhat older than the hippies. As time went by, the band became more accomplished musically. The group mixed leftist politics, satire, protest, and absurdist humor. They had some rather limited commercial success, but for many were more of an acquired taste or an underground act, depending on your viewpoint. "Dirty Old Man" is a classic, and they had a hilarious song called "Wide Wide River," a socially conscious song in which the singer puts on a televangelist/ fire and brimstone kind of voice. Though they had some bad or boring stuff too, many of their other tunes were thought provoking or funny.
