 | CleverElsie (12) 12/21/2007 | Rabies is usually transmitted by an animal bite and is, thus,
not highly infectious. However, those who are infected MUST have
a series of painful vaccinations within 14 days of infection. If
the bite is unnoticed or untreated for other reasons, rabies is almost
invariably fatal as its flulike symptoms progress to partial paralysis,
anxiety, agitation, confusion, and delirium. Researchers are
currently investigating ways to treat unvaccinated rabies by inducing
coma as the illness peaks and have had one success.
