My uncle was treated at the charity hospital in Jersey City built by Mayor Frank "I Am The Law" Hague, and his life was saved. After that, Mayor Hague could do no wrong, as far as my grandmother was concerned. I may be wrong, but I believe the hospital is still in operation, although probably not for much longer.

and, sometimes, severe swelling in the neck. Severe cases can
cause respiratory paralysis or cardiac arrest. Fatality is
estimated at 5-20%, but incidence has decreased significantly due to
the widespread diphtheria vaccine.
