Bleak and tired sounding. Next to Animals, the Wall sounds like an album of Children's sing-a-longs. I think at the time the band was feeling the burden of its success and hadn't discovered the way forward.

"Animals," like all post DSOTM albums, sold very well at the time, but unlike that album, "The Wall," or "Wish You Were Here," you don't really hear much of it on the radio at all. In part, that's because the songs tend to be more shapeless if you will, it's a rather formless and vague album in a way, more akin to turn of the 70's progressive rock acts, plus, the punk movement was burgeoning in this period, with its emphasis on short, intense tracks- and that genre had a tendency in some cases for sociopolitical tunes. Some of Floyd's contemporaries, especially in England, crumbled under the punk onslaught, while Floyd and others like Led Zeppelin or The Stones weren't really affected at all in a commercial sense. Overall "Animals" is a mediocre disc, other than the new punk acts, there really wasn't a lot going on in 1977 in terms of good albums by established acts, bands like The Stones and Who had long since peaked, and there was a lot of arena rock going on...
