Hoover Dam 5

When you get to the Dam make sure you do the tour with your "Dam Tour Guide." It is very educational and fun. Hoover Dam makes you appreciate engineering and feats that had to be endured to get a desert region more water and power. Make sure you walk over the dam into Arizona so that way you can say you did 2 states on 1 vacation ;0) For being made of concrete the Dam area is stunning! I've been to the Dam twice and would gladly go back.

I think I am learning from these reviews that the way to do Hoover Dam is to actually do a tour. I didn't. And I really wasn't all that impressed. But maybe next time I'll take some advice from here and I'll do the tour thing to learn more about it.

The History Channel from time to time has a series on the building of this dam, and it is a real feat for that time and place.

You couldn't build it today. It would be too expensive, and the tree huggers wouldn't let it be built.

Walking above the Hoover Dam offers a a great sight to behold, but getting close to the attraction, may be you should go by a guided boat or a helicopter. This I will tell you is the next thing I will do when I go back to see the Hoover Dam. Being in one perspective is nice, but being in more than one, is almost necessary in my view to really the site for what it truly can be.

Amazing!! Take the tour down the elevator to the electric generators to see how all the power is generated.

I took the tour and it was more interesting than I expected. Great views from the outdoor observation deck which you get access to if you take the tour. I must say that I did expect the tour to show a little more of the dam interior. But the admission price for the tour was still worth it.

I saw it from about 12,000 feet up as I jumped out of a SkyDive LasVegas aircraft- it looked like like the size of a grain of sand. LOL

I thought the Hoover Dam was really cool, and I loved the tours. Learned a lot as well. But I went pre-9/11 so I'm not sure how restricted the tours have become with security and all. But if you're in Las Vegas, it's only about 50 miles away so it's worth checking out.

We drove to Hoover Dam on our way to the Grand Canyon. We have to admit we were a little disappointed at the Hoover Dam, in our minds we pictured it a lot bigger(thanks to movies I guess). Post 9/11 the security checks take some time and the tours have been severely restricted. They are also building a bypass around the Dam so you will have to endure backed up traffic until it is done and you will have to go off the beaten path to get there once it is done. One neat thing is the change in time zones from one end of the Dam to the other between Pacific and Mountain time which is highlighted by large clocks on two of the intake towers of Hoover Dam. It is an amzaing structure that man built and if you are in Las Vegas it is probably worth a stop. We are giving it a 4 because of the genious it took to build it and once you see the landscape that surrounds the Dam you'll understand why.

Hoover Dam is pretty cool for all ages. Take the hard hat tour (if you still can, as I went pre-9/11). Very educational and a lot of fun. Wear comfy shoes and bring some water as you will be doing a lot of walking. The view from the 'window' in the side of the dam is breathtaking.

It truly is magnificent, but we had numerous problems during out visit. They had shut parts of the dam down for testing (which is understandable), but they handled the resultant crowds badly, and weren't informing anyone of why the wait was so huge.

Since my grandfather was one of the men who helped build this dam, I have to give it a rating of "great"!
