Devean, who played Division III ball at Augusta was one of Jerry West's final selections as a Laker GM (West's final selection was Mark Madsen for the 2000 NBA Draft). Devean was a good athlete and had a pretty decent jump shot but was an average or at best slightly above average player and Mitch Kupchack made a mistake in hoping Deavan was a suitable small forward for the club going into the 2003-04 season, after the club had signed Karl Malone and Gary Payton as free-agents. However Devean was destroyed by Tayshaun Prince in the 2004 Finals and Devean was gone after the 2005-06 season.
