The Rooster was among my favorites as a kid. A hard nosed, gritty, all- out sort of player. He was a solid fielder, above average, but not flashy or acrobatic. By today's standards, or even 70's standards, Burleson did not put up great numbers. He never hit .300, swiped a lot of bases, or hit more than 7 or 8 homers. Still, he made the All Star team and was one of the better shortstops in the AL during the second half of the 70's. After being traded from Boston, he was never the same and injuries took their toll. However, he'd rank behind only Garciaparra, Cronin, Pesky, Petrocelli and maybe 1 or 2 others for all-time Red Sox shortstops.
