2.5 The saving grace early on was that he could hit and had power. Their other main catcher in that era, Gary Allenson, was a good fielder who couldn't hit. Gedman was dreadful behind the plate, and very slow even for a backstop. After '86, he was awful with the bat too, barely better than the awful Marc Sullivan, a guy who was one of the team's owner's son- and though I'm sure Marc was a nice guy, he caught a lot of flack for that. Gedman didn't regain his hitting ability in short stints with other clubs, and was out of the bigs a few years after leaving Boston.
